La Plata Electric offers solar power one school at a time

Tri-State member co-op La Plata Electric Association (Durango, Colo.) offers members the opportunity to contribute to the Local Green Power Fund. Members can designate any amount, starting at 8 cents, to be added to their monthly bills to support local renewable projects.

“Good things come in small packages,” said Mark Schwantes, La Plata manager of corporate services, noting that on average, 1,600 members participate each month. Two middle schools had small photovoltaic solar systems installed in November. That will bring to four the total number of schools where La Plata has paid for the 4-kilowatt systems.
